Rubbish

Rubbish has consistently been found throughout the length of the Canning Stock Route (CSR). Most of the items left are non-biodegradable. Some are abandoned items — such as tyres, fuel drums and damaged camping gear — and can last in the environment for years. A simple way to work around this issue is if you bring it in, take it out. This will prove easier if you take a few simple steps:

  • reduce the amount of non-biodegradable material you buy beforehand

  • where possible, remove unnecessary packaging prior to departure; and

  • avoid carrying in heavy items such as glass bottles.

The only bins that can be found along the route are at Well 33. The Kunawarritji community empties these.

Aluminium cans and tins can be burnt to remove food traces, then raked from the cooled fire and taken with you. Please do not leave cans, tins or aluminium foil in campfires as they do not degrade and only build up for the next users. No one likes to turn up to a camp and have to empty out someone’s rubbish.

Before moving on from a camp or resting place, search the area for micro-rubbish — such as bits of food and packaging — including cigarette filters and organic litter such as orange peels, or egg and nut shells.

Please help look after the beautiful desert Country by taking out everything you bring in with you.
